    Barry Smith

After witnessing Jean-Luc Ponty playing next to Majavishnu and the incredible Americans Ralph Armstrong & Michael Walden in the Mahavishnu Orchestra at the Music Hall in my hometown of Tucson Arizona, at just 16 years old, became truly and honestly REBORN... Immediately I acquired a violin from a friend, began to learn to play, bought a Barcus Berry pickup bridge (NO WAY could I afford the Barcus violin played by almost all professional electric players then), added an echoplex and phase shifter to the practice of my new religon. After wearing out several vinyl copies of Apocalypse, Upon The Wings Of Music, Imaginary Voyage, Enigmatic Ocean, Cosmic Messenger, and Live, I replaced them all when CD's came out! I must say that after seeing Ponty live 7 times, & listening to my virtually complete Ponty music collection and his DVDs, Jean-Luc still to this day is not only my favorite violin player (immense pioneering creativity, perfect intonation, ability to express ANY emotion) he is also my favorite band leader (ALWAYS with amazing musicians, and very generous letting them stretch) and of course a brilliant composer having invented his own musical genre!! With that, I will join his Kickstarter campain and look forward to his and Jon Anderson's concert in the relatively close Aspen Colorado! Merci Beaucoup & Bon Voyage Jean-Luc!

JLP: I'm very excited to hear about the collaboration with JA! Can't wait to hear what you guys come up with... hope you will tour (more on that below). Also, I'm very happy to hear about the new trio thing with Stanley! While we're on the subject of collaborations, here's my Christmas list: would love to see a reunion with McLaughlin.... also, I've always felt you and Jeff Beck are each the great virtuosos at your respective instruments, and you are both enormously creative, so, I think a Ponty/Beck album and tour would be amazing. Just wishing... Yes, I second Dan Began's earlier comments about hoping for a US tour... but, come on, Dan... you've been a fan for 40 years and didn't have a chance to see a show? I was 15 when I stole a fake ID and got into the Electric Ballroom in Dallas to see JLP (with Stuermer, Fowler, etc.) on the first solo tour. Amazing! Then, next tour, I remember JLP warming up... for Bonnie Raitt! After JLP's scintillating set, Bonnie came out and said "Jean Luc is a hard act to follow. I don't think I can." I like Bonnie's music, but, she was right! Who would want to have to follow JLP? Dan Began, I could go on and on about the wonderful JLP shows I've seen through the decades (including the awesome RTF thing in 2011), but I don't want to make you feel bad... let's just get him back over here in the states, and don't miss another show!

BMB: it depends how you count beats in Cosmic Messenger, the concept was a slow basic rock groove, and the melody is made of 16th notes already, but when performing it live we double up the tempo occasionally.

As for touring, there will be concerts around the world in 2015 including in the U.S. - too early to give more info at this time as it's at the planning stage. More details should be announced within the next few weeks.

Hello Jean Luc! I very much enjoy your music from the seventies and would love to see it played live. I was wondering, what are your thoughts on possibly doing a tour and performing albums in their entirety such as Enigmatic Ocean, Cosmic Messenger, and A Taste for Passion? Have you ever thought of the idea before? I would love to know your opinion. Thank you for such wonderful music!

    BMB

This article claims that JLP-along with Wayne Shorter and Pat Metheny-has been invited to judge the 2014 International Songwriting Competition: http://www.mi2n.com/press.php3?press_nb=175551 If true (everything on the Internet is true, n'est-ce pas?), fascinating. Judging, potential project with Jon Anderson, a new trio project....perhaps things are really aligning to facilitate a 2015 US tour...would love for that to be a JLP group tour, but happy for any appearance.

  • Cosmic Messenger-the drum parts

    BMB

Hello Jean-Luc! I've been listening to the title track of Cosmic Messenger recently, and I was curious...on the studio album, plus the time I saw you in 2009-each time the drum parts for high-hat/cymbals were most likely 8th notes. As I "rehearse" this composition in my head, I wonder-were the cymbal parts ever played with 16th notes? Might sound interesting...

jean luc, again I check your website and see no tour dates for the US. I've been a fan for over 40 years, but never had the pleasure of seeing you in concert. Judging by the message board, you still have a big following in the US. Please don't forget us. The Genesee Theater in Waukegan, IL would be a great venue. The Moody Blues, B.B. King, Mannheim Steamroller, Gordon Lightfoot. I would love to add your ticket to my collection. So thank you for all the many hours of listening pleasure and I have my fingers crossed. Be happy, be healthy, Dan.
