  • Song titles in Life Enigma

    Jean-Luc

I saw Rodrigo's questions last week about song titles in Life Enigma, but I did not want to post a hurried reply and was so busy that I had to wait until now. The reason why I was so busy is that, except for going to Bologna, Italy, last Friday to perform a concert with my band (great theatre and great audience by the way) I spent every day of the past two weeks with technicians transferring all my synthesizer sounds into some new equipment - which meant all my Synclavier sound samples from the 80s, plus all the new sounds used for all the albums recorded since then - because the synths we used on the road for the past 15 years were begging for retirement.... and William our keyboardist was crying for new equipment after a few scares during our recent shows! So now.....my answer to Rodrigo is that musical inspiration comes first, then I search for a title. The source of inspiration can come from different subjects that are important to me, from the little I can understand about astrophysics, to biology, philosophy, or from some deep emotion I feel at the time. Sometimes the source of inspiration is very clear and choosing a title is very easy, at other times music flows from my subconscious so mysteriously that choosing the right title can be more difficult. Also, as opposed to vocals with lyrics, instrumental music is a very abstract expression which can stimulate a listener's imagination without limits. For instance even though I call one piece "Lonely Among All', the sadness in the music will be perceived differently by different listeners, one person said that it evoked her compassion for the homeless, a few others mentioned the pain they felt after loosing a parent. There is nothing consciously spiritual in my approach to music but I understand that it can be perceived that way and I am very happy each time I learn that a listener such as Rodrigo feels very receptive to a specific album. Music is about sharing and it's the best way for me to break away from feeling "lonely among all".

Dear Jean Luc, I have always been puzzled by the choice of song titles for Life Enigma. What was on your mind when you were writing these songs? Do they have anything to do with any spiritual beliefs you might have? Can you share them with your audience? As a spiritist, I do believe we are an infinite human caravan, and many times I have felt lonely among all while looking at the firmament. But the good things in this world, such as passionate music straight from an artist's soul, reassure me that life does go on in wonderful ways, although it's still an enigma to most of us. If that was one of the things you were trying to convey when you wrote these songs, you succeeded admirably. I just hope you could clarify it a little more for all of us. I can't ask Bach what he was thinking when composing, but fortunately I can still ask YOU! Warm greetings from Brésil, Rodrigo Moritz

My comment was intended to be complimentary to Jean Luc's artistry as a legendary jazz violinist. That's all. I still hope he and his band play the NYC area.
