  • choral singing and dates in France

    Jean Luc

John D: no I never sang.....period.....or when I had to during solfeggio class at the Paris conservatory, the teacher laughed and said: you sing very much in tune, but your voice....ahaha.....never try to be a singer.

I found the comments on conducting very interesting. On a related note, Jean Luc, have you ever engaged in choral singing? I did so a few years back as a member of our church choir. I found the experience of singing John Rutter's music in particular absolutely wonderful. There's the spiritual aspect, and then there's the sheer musical beauty of it (which I enjoyed the most).

  • Brazilian TV

    Michael/JLP Productions

Hi Pedro, JLP's management tried to contact the TV network which filmed his concert in Sao Paulo (in 1980 I think) but got no reaction. We will try again, it was not Brand TV at the time, if you have more information please send an email (in contact page) and thanks for the suggestion.

  • answering your questions

    Jean Luc

Francesco: I played acoustic violin throughout the entire album for the studio recording with Rite of Strings in 95. I also played an acoustic violin on tour but with an L.R. Baggs pickup like on the Live at Montreux DVD. and to answer Cosmic Messenger's question about bows, I only have them re-haired when the bow hairs start breaking easily, and looses its thickness, or if the hair does not hold rosin anymore and gets slippery. The average is 2-3 years nowadays probably due to the very good hair quality I get. I don't change bows during shows, I mainly use the composite bow by Benoit Rolland, but in some concert halls I might switch to an old wooden bow for my unaccompanied solo, as it often sounds more like a real acoustic violin, warmer. The composite bow works great with the electric sound, bigger and more powerful. And yes.....I used to break a lot of bow hair in my early years, mostly due to the higher band volume. No I have never used a Tourte, which today is worth a fortune. I have a Pecatte though which is close, but they don't necessarily sound better than cheaper bow, in fact the old wooden bow I play regularly is the cheapest in my collection, and it gives me the best acoustic sound.

By the way I really admire the acoustic sound your violin has on "Song to John", this is a barcus berry or is it a pure acoustic violin? Because it sounds really good and so many acoustic-electrics sound only good amplified.

  • bowing--bowing

    Cosmic Messenger

    fake paradise

Some of the fans here may know 'Bowing-Bowing' is a Grapelli/Ponty tune. Anyhow, since the message below brought up bows I thought I would ask a question of Mr. Ponty re his bows. I feel Mr. Ponty has been very generous with his time answering many fans' questions and I rather not impose. But I don't recall much info on this site or in interviews re your bows. A good friend of mine who is a 'fiddler' and a fan of yours asked what I thought was an interesting question(s). How often do you re-hair your bows? Do you change bows during a concert? (I do recall in a concert where several of the hairs broke and were 'dangling' while you were playing.) I see on your equip page the bows you currently use. Have you used Tourte bows? Best regards and look forward to a show in Northern California in November...
