http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcjBD7rOFR8 Don't see this footage too often! Very interesting, especially from a "band transition" standpoint, i.e. some of the Tchokola musicians, along with Chris Rhyne on keyboards. Would love to see footage (if it existed) of the Live at Chene Park concert...

  • your questions

    Jean Luc

First I would like to remind all of you who ask if and when I will perform in your area that I will be mostly touring with the "Return To Forever IV" project this year, as mentioned in the News page and also at the top of the Concert Dates page. After a first tour in Australia in February we will be touring in the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia from June to October 2011. As soon as dates will be confirmed for this next period they will be listed in the Concert Dates page in this website, so please be patient and visit this site again in a month or two for updates.

I think that we will record some of the shows, so there is a chance that a live CD and perhaps DVD will be released later on. There will be no new CD nor DVD of my band released this year.

As for the hyphen in my first name, the official French way is with it, however it is also written without it sometimes, even in France. When I type in a hurry I skip the hyphen to go faster, also the hyphen in French ties up the two names, therefore my first name is Jean-Luc, in English the hyphen separates them, as a consequence a lot of people in America think that my first name is Jean, and that my last name is Luc Ponty, which has created some confusion over the years when booking plane tickets, checking in hotels etc. and skipping the hyphen solves that problem.

I've been a big fan of yours since the '70s. It's great to hear you are touring in RTF with Chick, Stanley, Frank & Lenny. I'd love to see and hear all of you revisit the fusion from the good old days! Frank is a surprising but interesting replacement for Al. I saw and met Frank when he was playing in Steve Smith's Vital Information. Great guitarist and nice man. Can't wait to see you in NY! If I could ask you one question: You used to hyphenate your name Jean-Luc. You don't hyphenate anymore. May I ask why? in closing, thank you so much for your unique and splendid gift that you share with your fans!

I've been a huge fan of yours since '76 when I heard your new album at the time, "Imaginary Voyage". I met you in Albany, NY just long enough to get your autograph when you were touring your Rite of Strings acoustic trio with Stanley Clarke & Al DiMeola. I felt a bit foolish when I asked if you were going to keep making albums and you answered, "I hope so." I had asked because it seems to be 5 yrs. or so between albums for you lately when you used to do an album every year. I never got to explain the question at the time...but I was afraid you were planning retirement. Anyway, nice to hear you're touring with RTF, even if Frank Gambale is replacing Al DiMeola. I met Frank when he was playing with Steve Smith's Vital Information. Frank is a great guitarist, and a nice guy. When will you be coming to NY? Will you be anywhere near Albany, NY?

  • Tour Album / DVD? Studio album?

    Chris Moore

Hi Mr. Ponty and Happy New Year! (Both calender and Chinese...) I am very excited about the new RTF4 tour coming to the United States and will be checking regularly in the hopes that a San Francisco Bay Area date or dates will be coming. I was wondering whether there had been any consideration for a CD or DVD for the tour? Thought that if I brought it up now that there may be more chance of something happening ;-) Regardless I (and everyone else!) am really looking forward to the opportunity of seeing you live again. Also, following up on an earlier posting....will you be releasing a new studio album this year? Thanks again for providing the soundtrack to life... Cheers! Chris
